All I Want For Christmas Is a Better Goodreads

If I could get a present from the internet this year, I would want a Goodreads that allows for more finely-tuned tracking of the books I’ve read. Options like “I read this book more than once this year” would be a great start. A separate track for tracking audiobooks that puts them in the aggregate count but also holds them apart as their own category (so you can see how many audiobooks you go through in a year independent from sit-down-and-read) books would also be nice.

See, I really like reading.

I’ve read 71 books this year, as compared to 51 in 2015 and just 34 in 2014, which was the first year I started tracking. I’ve really stepped up my game.

Now I think it’s time for Goodreads to step up their game, too.

Don’t get me wrong; I like Goodreads. I just think it could be better.

See, I actually read 75 books this year, because I read the 4-book Raven Cycle twice (yes, it’s that good) but Goodreads can’t track multiple read-dates for the same book within a single year. One hack is to say you’ve read a different edition, but man, screw that. There’s not always more than one available.

And I didn’t count the audiobooks I’ve listened to on my long commute to and from work because I kind of feel like audio should be tracked separately, as it’s not the same thing as sitting down and actually making my brain deal with written words. (American Gods, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverwhere, Hogfather, Game of Thrones, and Night Watch bring the total to 81.)

Admittedly, some of what I read were comic books/manga/graphic novels, so those take less time than things like the whole Harry Potter series (yes, again) or The Kingkiller Chronicles (better every time).

But still. I feel like a site dedicated to reading would develop better tracking for the hardcore readers who use it. So if Goodreads is feeling in the giving spirit, that’s what I want from the internet for Christmas this year.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I feel like a failure because I only read 14 new books this year, but I did read a lot more books than but they were books I had already read.

I make a list for every year to keep track, which helps because a book can be in multiple lists if you do it like that, but I still want to be able to track books I’ve read more than once in a year. There are some stories I just really love! lol

I know right? Like this year I started rereading a series that I love, and there are like 14 books in that series, and of course, I can’t count them again.

    Thanks for the awesome suggestions!
